Dance that makes the heart soar

Alvin Ailey American Dance TheatherAs I’ve written in the past, I love to see dance that makes the heart soar. Thus I try to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater – That used to be under the artistic direction of once-dancer par excellent Judith Jamison — whenever they are in town. I happen to love this troupe that has performed for over 23 million people in 71 countries on multiple continents. I totally relate to the dances and the music that happens to be rooted in the unique African-American experience.

I also love that while creating his dances, the late great formally trained founder, Alvin Ailey called forth his memories of the American south. He summoned the universal human experience so aptly expressed in the blues, gospel music, and Negro spirituals. Doing so caused him to create unbelievable works, one of which is his critically acclaimed and most popular, entitled Revelations.

Now don’t get me wrong. The company performs ballet and other dance genres. They also strive to preserve the wholly American modern dance heritage. Now more than ever is this evident. Perhaps it is due Robert Battle, who became the Ailey Dance Theater’s Artistic Director in 2011.

I must say this year, there was a distinct difference. In the past, while watching the performers, whose ethnicities widely vary, I felt powerfully moved, and stirred. I even thought about the origins of African Dance. However, there have been subtle changes which caused myself and others who attended to question whether or not the Dance Theater is moving away from the traditional, to become more mainstream.

To me ‘more mainstream’ like portions of the 2014 show are overkill. I mean who can’t turn on their TV or tune in to YouTube to watch modern dance on any number of platforms. For me what made the Ailey experience one that I looked forward to each year was the fact that the dance troupe reminded us that African dance has always played a vital role in the lives of tribal people. Dance was used in everyday life. It was significant in religious rituals too; it was used to request success from the supernatural, and to deter danger. Dance was and still is used to express emotion, and to celebrate life’s milestones.

I know that other ethnicities use dance in similar manners. However African dancers do what some others do not. They use their body’s different centers to create complex movements; whereas in parts of the world dancers simply move the body as a whole.

I love the isolation that African dance employs, which causes different areas of the body to rhythmically move while creating a breathtaking whole. I love the mood, set by the drum, the beat — the actual steady heartbeat of the dance. The drum and the beat were carried to the new world when the enslavement of Africans began, in the 15 and 1600’s. In Spain, the Caribbean, and in the Americas, dance and the drumbeat were used to keep the African’s cultural connection with his and her homeland alive. However, in North America this became prohibited. Yet despite the oft times degrading harshness of their new existence, the African found a way to allow his and her spirit to occasionally soar.

My ancestors did so through beautiful transcendent dance. They allowed their moves, and their bodies — unlike their souls and their dreams — to adapt. Instead of lifting the feet, as prohibited, the hips took over, and the feet were slid or shuffled, as the rest of the body continued to undulate to the beat.

This type of dance is a powerful thing to watch, especially in a collective audience where the energy felt can be palpable. Not only does it speak to those of African descent, it simply speaks…to humans no matter their race, or ethnicity. This is evidenced by the millions, who like me; flock to see the Ailey Dance Theater. This is also evidenced by the dances that we see throughout the world, innumerable dances that have been Afro-Rhythmically inspired. As an African-American, I am proud to say: beautiful dance – African dance, and ethnic dance — will forever live on. I simply hope it will do so in the performances of the Dance Theater that was founded by Alvin Ailey, the creative genius now gone who also believed in African-inspired dance.

As a longtime patron of the arts I have one thing to say. I plainly say to the present and future Artistic Directors who will helm this TRADITIONAL dance troupe, REMEMBER OUR ROOTS! I say so because we want to continue to experience dance that makes the heart soar.

Don’t wanna look Old? If you fall into this category, if you happen to be someone who doesn’t want to look old before you get –say ninety-nine, then have I got something for you to check out. Written by Charla Krupp, the book  How Not To Look Old is chock full of fast and effortless ways to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter, and 10 times better — exactly what it says on the cover. Roughly about 254 pages, this guide begins with how to age gracefully. Not.

Actually, the author speaks candidly about how aging can stick in one’s throat, like my  grandma’s dry turkey. It can be hard to swallow. The author speaks of how women can discover things that seemingly pop up overnight — like age spots, crow’s feet, chin hair, sagging bazooms, and bunions! Witch But don’t be alarmed. I’m speaking to those of us who don’t wanna look old before our time. The book’s author says we can do something about those things and others. She also states we can look great doing so.
So there I was, reading about the author’s proposed plan of attack on aging, and becoming more interested by the minute. Click here to see why…

Book Giveaway and Radio Appearance

Hi there,

I wanted to let you know about something I’m doing soon…

I am going to appear on ‘A WOMAN’S SPIRIT’ — the radio show, click on ‘Listen Online, Live Streaming Radio.’  It is an empowering, enriching 1-hour program, for women. Men are welcome too. Briefly, let me describe the show. It is a laid back, quiet space, located smack dab in the middle of a week that sometimes consists of chaos. You get the picture…this show is something you need, an experience you can use to re-charge. I must tell you, the show’s host, Ms. Vanecia Wills-Leufroy has the most lovely cadence to her voice. I often listen to her while I write. Her rich deep vocal tones  remind me of cacao and cream, or of the jazz diva Sarah Vaughn’s extraordinary singing voice, and this host connects with her audience. She feels them, and they her! I like that. Check out the show and you just might agree. Oh, and trust me to liken anything — even a person’s voice — to food!

However, to get back on track, on ‘A WOMAN’S SPIRIT’ we will host a two-book giveaway for my latest novel.

A deliciously frustrating and exhilarating love story.

It is called Turnabout

For those of you who don’t know, Turnabout is a love story, but it is not just about the lovers. Their family, friends, and even those whom only a mama can love, are all entwined in this must-read.

The date of my appearance is

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The lovely thing about this show is you may listen from your laptop or computer!

Click here to go to the Radio Show.

Or you may tune in online:  www.radiosandysprings.com/showpages/womansspirit.php

Don’t forget, it’s next week: Wednesday September 1, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

As I said, I will discuss my latest novel. I will also explain to listeners how I found ‘my voice’ — my reason for writing.  Then two lucky winners will win their own signed copy of my book!

This particular episode of ‘A WOMAN’S SPIRIT’ is also slated to be re-broadcast, and will be available for you to listen to in the radio show’s archives.  www.radiosandysprings.com/showpages/womansspirit.php

I want you to listen. I’d like that. I also want you to enter the contest — not because I’ll get anything out of it … but wouldn’t it be great if you won?!

Things I want To Discuss

Okay, last time, I mentioned having a few things I wanted to discuss with you. Well one of those things is…my latest novel Turnabout. It is now on Amazon kindle, and it’s available on Kindle UK! I’m stoked.

A deliciously frustrating and exhilarating love story.

The other thing I wanted to tell you about is a book I’m writing. I happen to be working on the third book in The Cohort Trilogy. For those of you who need catching up, this trilogy is about four friends, a sexy hunk of a gay male and his three women friends. In the first install of the trilogy, readers get to meet the foursome. Readers also get to see that the friends who call themselves ‘cohorts’ –because they are like partners in crime– believe their friendship is perfect, or darn near.

However, their thing starts to unravel—with a betrayal. Isn’t that always how it begins? One of the women cavorts with the gay male’s love interest — his man. Oh, our male cohort’s name is Beau. Well, you know drama follows… You’ve got to pick up this novel. The name is Absolution, and it is available online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million.

1st in The Cohort Trilogy by April Alisa Marquette

Absolution is also available in stores, ask them to order it if you don’t see it. Store staffers will gladly do so and let you know when this juicy  book comes in.

Now, to tell you—briefly, about the second novel in The Cohort Trilogy, it is called Progression. And as the name suggests, in this the sequel, readers get to see how the cohorts have progressed. We get to see if they are any wiser, since they’ve grown older. Also shown are others who were in the background of the prior novel, Absolution. However, in Progression, the second install, there are some characters! Our gay male hunk has another man this go ‘round. Beau’s new jump-off’s name is Sandal, and what a red-haired queen Sandal is! Readers just may want to strangle him, while others may laugh out loud at his antics.

2nd in The Cohort Trilogy

You know what? I can’t even tell you about the third novel in The Cohort Trilogy, not yet, because there is more that I need to tell you about Progression

I gotta go put a load of laundry in though, since I didn’t do it earlier in the week. However, you know the drill. I’ll get back with you. We’ll pick up right here. Stay tuned… because as I said, I’ve I got stuff to tell you.

Shout out to Tam! Hey lady.

My latest Novel

TURNABOUT

Hi there! I want to tell you what I’m excited about now — My novel TURNABOUT. It’s adult fiction, a romance. Now I’ve got to tell you, this story is more a traditional love story, for me anyway, because my readers know that traditional is not what I do. I’m not that kind of lady. I can’t seem to wrap my mind around traditional or conventional… go figure.

Anyway, this love story is not traditional in that it involves family, friends, and even foes. Oh but it’s good!! It’s fun, titillating, erotic, witty, thought-provoking… It’s many things, and it may even bring you to tears.

Let me give you a little background. TURNABOUT is Abigail’s story. She’s a smart, sensual, savvy, business woman. She is JaMerican –Jamaican and American– and boy does MaMa have a temper!

It’s also Joseph’s story too. He happens to be a successful pop music producer who is attractive in a rugged sort of way. You met both him and Abigail in Absolution 🙂 Think about it. Anyway, Joseph wants more from Abigail than he often gets. Is that because her ex, a real pain in the… you know what is always around? Or is it because there is always someone else getting in the way?

I’ve got to tell you. I am excited about the release of  TURNABOUT. It’ll be available at the end of March 2010, or maybe a little before. I’ll let you know. Anyway, I need you to get your copy so that you can let me know what you think. I’ll tell you, sometimes we send out promotional copies before they’re fully released and the feedback’s been great!

Well gotta run, gotta write, but also note. TURNABOUT will soon also be available on Amazon KINDLE.

Happy Reading, and remember, if you’re an adult who likes good fiction, if you’re a woman who loves a great read, then I write for you!!

Getting Through EXODUS

So a little bit ago I told you that in my sometimes surreal novel EXODUS, the main character, sultry Aqua feels as if her world is topsy-turvy. I mentioned that she is on the eerie island that she was warned not to go to. She is there with the Latin hunk she met while working for the man with whom she was involved. So why, you might ask, is she out in the back of beyond with Noel, Mr. Sexy. My answer, because she wanted to be. Yes, despite the heinous things going on. However, now that Aqua is asking questions…all hell has broken loose.

A thrilling Mystery by April Alisa Marquette

Someone, or something, desires to take Aqua’s life. When you read the book you will see the instances where this entity attempts to dispose of her. I am truly hoping it will give you pause, maybe even a few chills. It is what I was striving for.

Anyway, the dashing Noel, and those surrounding him, and Aqua, are fast running out of options.  Therefore, at someone’s suggestion, Noel calls for outside help.

You know how you try to try to handle a problem, but then finally you just have to throw up your proverbial hands? Well that’s where Noel found himself. It was then that he decided to reach out, and quickly too—

Will you look at the time? I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you back in a bit. You know the drill 😉

And in the meantime, enjoy whatever it  is you’re reading!

Available at Amazon.com or ask for it at Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million bookstores!

More On EXODUS

Okay, so I’m back. Previously I was telling you about my novel EXODUS.

The first in the Sea Isles Series, a trilogy, EXODUS is adult fiction. If you like a good story, if you like to get to know the characters, and if you like to see and feel as though you’re actually in the story, then you will need to pick this up. If you like scenery, and details; if you’d like to laugh, and feel slight prickles of fear dancing up your spine from time to time, then you are going to need to check this out. If you want to see the characters again, after this story ends, this is the book for you.

But back to the story. We were at the part where the sultry lead character, Aqua, had accompanied her Latin hunk Noel to a mysterious little known island, although they received dire warnings not to go. They were told that evil would surely await them should they make the trip. Heedless, they went.

On the island, Aqua began to sleep-walk, among other things that were strange, for her. Those things she did at night. However, in the daytime she listlessly drifted down hallways dusty from disuse. As she floated along on forbidden floors in a creepy antebellum house, she became privy to many things … many truly disturbing things. And no, I won’t tell you what they are. I can’t. You know that.

I will say though that when Aqua believed she witnessed a murder, she became terrifically shaken! Then when no one around her seemed to listen or care, she became desperate, for answers– oh shoot! I’ve gotta run. But you know the drill. 😉

I’ll get back with you.

Make today a good one, and when you read, whatever it is you read, please do enjoy it!

More About Exodus

Back to where I left off… I told you about my novel EXODUS, a mystery that hints at the supernatural. This is adult fiction, containing wit, sass, and eroticism. One reader kept messaging me as she read, asking all sorts of questions. I understood these were rhetorical because at the end of each message she would say, “Don’t answer that. I’ve got to go find out what happens now.”

An intriguing erotic mystery

So, in this thought-provoking tale which is the first in a trilogy, I mentioned Aqua the sultry leading lady. Well now I’ve got you to the part where she and the dashing Latin Noel realize there’s heat between them. He gives Aqua the digits. Obviously, she calls him at some point, and thus their adventure.

The couple wind up island-hopping, and eventually find themselves on a little known Isle with a strange name. Now, I must tell you, the pair were advised not to make this trip. But they are grown, so they did what they had to do.

On the little known isle, strange things begin to happen… Aqua begins to sleep walk–although she has never done so before in her life. In the dark of night she glides through the bayou, despite the murky swamp world being filled with ravenous alligators.

Now I tell you all this because I need to get to the sequel which I’m polishing up for soon release. I’ll soon give you the name of it. Oh, I’m excited about it! because in it you again connect with characters from EXODUS, even some that may have seemed obscure. However, there are new people, and these characters are just as interesting, or maybe more so than those you ‘met’ in EXODUS.

Oh–time’s up. You know I’ve got to run.  I’ll be back though, because we’ve got to get through this, so stay tuned… and I’ll get with you soon.

Make today a good one!

Exodus, And It’s Sequel

I need to tell you about a book I wrote. It’s called EXODUS and it is a mystery that hints at the supernatural. The reason I need to tell you about this book is because in time I want to tell you about another. You see, EXODUS is the first in the Sea Isles Series, a trilogy and I’d like to tell you about the second book, the sequel.

However, first I must give you some background on EXODUS. I need to, so that when I tell you about the sequel, you’ll be able to keep up. Now EXODUS (available at Amazon.com) is about a sultry woman who, like some women, would like to get married. Her name is Aqua–you’ll need to read the story to find out why–and she has  been involved for years with the owner of a posh supper club. This man, Dyson, does not want marriage. Yet he proposes–that Aqua should fill in at his club, for his absentee hostess.

Well! Doesn’t that just beat all? Anyway, Aqua is insulted. Yet after a bit she is compelled to ‘help Dyson out.’  And in doing so, she winds up meeting another… Latin businessman Noel cannot keep his eyes from straying, time and again, back to Aqua. Believing she is actually the supper club’s hostess, he converses with her. Unbeknown, Dyson is in his office, watching the exchange on one of many monitors.

Now, I’m giving you facts on this story, so I can eventually get around to letting you know about the sequel that I happen to be excited about. It will be released this year. I will tell you more about EXODUS, to get you up to speed, but never fear, I will only give you so much. And I have to tell you, if you don’t check it out, you will simply have missed one great read!

To finish what we’ve started, I’ll have to get back with you–I’ve gotta run. Therefore, stay tuned my friends. Enjoy the rest of your day and I’ll see you back in a while.
